Palatine Gallery

The Palatine Gallery is home to an extraordinary collection of the great masters of painting, housed in one of the most impressive historical buildings in Florence.

The gallery showcases a series of masterpieces by 16th and 17th-century artists of Italian, Flemish, French and English provenence, including such luminaries as Raphael (represented by 11 of his most famous works), Caravaggio, Rubens, Velasquez, van Dyck, Botticelli, Tintoretto, del Sarto, Perugino, Reni, Maratta and innumerable others.

The gallery brings together the private collections of the entire Medici family and was arranged between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Astonishingly by modern standards, these paintings are arrayed without an eye for chronology, themes or even authorship – the intention is purely decorative and the shape of frames was a decisive factor in deciding which paintings went on which walls.

This very comprehensive collection is a defininte must-see for any itinerant art historian or enthusiast visiting Florence.
